The most important decision for a player at the start of the game is to choose their faction. There are ten factions available to players in the Circle of Realms. Your faction determines when your turn falls, your bonuses, traits, buildings, units, starting position, and playstyle. Beginning players should base their faction choice on each faction's information page as this gives a broad overview of each faction's strengths, weaknesses, and flavor.
Each faction has an hour glass icon on their page along with a number. This is the faction initiative or when the faction's turn falls on a full 10-player game (1 = 1st, 2 = 2nd, and so forth). Factions that aren't present in a game are skipped. When 2 or more factions form an alliance, then all members of the alliance take their turn at the same time as the member who has the earliest initiative. Otherwise, this turn order remains unchanged throughout the game.
There are several decks of cards that need to be shuffled at the start of the game:
Four quest decks, one for each realm
Four environmental effect decks, one for each realm
Two quest target decks, one each for heroes and nonheroes
One unlockable deck for each player
One mining deck
The following decks should be set out but unshuffled so that players can easily find cards in them:
Each faction's unit deck and technology deck
The resource deck
Before a game begins, players set up the battlefield by distributing resources, weapons, and all other items throughout the field. This distribution is explained in the Resources and Gold section of this guide.
Every faction has specific starting units that it uses to build up its civilization. These units are located in the upper left-hand corner of each faction's information section. In this section, all starting units and their location are listed. Additionally, this page shows the faction leader (if killed, the faction loses all bonuses and cannot advance tech ages), faction bonuses, and faction traits. Bonuses and traits are applicable to all units under the player's control (unless stated otherwise) and help to ensure that each faction plays differently.
